THE BICYCLE

1897-----------------------------1999

The bicycle is arguably the most practical machine ever invented for land transportation. In its simplest form, it has not changed significantly in a hundred years or more yet it remains in use by millions of people all over the world. Unlike most devices for carrying man from place to place, the bicycle requires no source of energy other than that supplied by the operator. Virtually anyone in health can master the operation of a bicycle and most do so at an early age. In some cultures people ride bicycles for life much to their benefit and to the benefit of their environment.

While the bicycle appears to be simple it is not. The geometry of the bicycle allows the rider to maintain forward motion in a state of dynamic equilibrium. Stability, which results from the geometry of the front forks and wheel, increases with speed due to the gyroscopic effect of wheel rotation. Knowledge of bicycle dynamics is of little interest to most riders. Fortunately learning to balance and move forward on a bicycle comes as if by instinct much as we learn to walk. A marvelous combination; human and bicycle.

A well maintained bicycle can last a lifetime. Take care of yours.
