ANOTHER SCHWINN WORLD SPORT

In December 1998 I followed up on an ad in the Bradenton Florida paper announcing a "huge garage sale" which listed two Schwinn road bikes among the sale items. I just happened to be going by the sale location after taking my wife shopping and said; "hey there's a garage sale lets stop". My wife loves garage sales so she readily agreed. The sale was not huge as the ad claimed but all I cared about was the bikes and a nice Blackburn bike stand. As soon as I saw the huge aluminum Canondale tandem on the garage wall I knew these folks were serious riders. Of the two bikes, the smaller framed World Sport was much the nicer bike, showing little signs of use. The larger framed bike, which was a lower model showed a fair amount of use. The lady in charge said that she had purchased the World Sport in 1989 to ride with her husband but found that she couldn't ride at his pace. Consequently they bought the tandem. She estimated the World Sport had been ridden no more than 200 miles. She set a price and said she wouldn't come down a penny. I bought the Blackburn stand but knew my wife would not be happy if I bought the bike. About a month later, after stewing over my missed opportunity, I called the lady and learned that she still had the bikes at the price she quoted earlier. She knew they were worth it. I bought the bike on the sly and put it in the middle of about 6 bikes so my wife wouldn't see it. She eventually did notice it and was not too hard on me for buying it.

The bike cleaned up very easily and is a beautiful looking and riding machine. As is my practice, I replaced the drop bars with a more upright set and installed a gel saddle. This beautiful blue Schwinn occupies a privileged position in my family room alongside my Juice Custom, Fuji DS custom, and pristeen Green Raleigh Sports. I hope you enjoyed looking at this Schwinn bike and I welcome your comments.
